A fantastic volume of the liberation of the African continent from Axis occupation during WWII.

Rick Atkinson doesn't just describe the battles, he gets into details about the preparation, politics, and people that made up the Allies war machine. He explores the naivety of the American forces, the growing maturity of Eisenhower, the prickliness of Montgomery, and force of nature of Patton, and so on.

Masterful and brilliant - I can't wait to read the next two volumes.

Sadly I ran out of time and had to return this book back to my library. But I will take it out again later, 100% sure.
