El escritor de origen afgano, Sirdar Ikbal Ali Shah, escribió en inglés este libro de viajes y relatos a principios de los años treinta, cuando la Primera Guerra Mundial era "la Gran Guerra" y la geografí­a polí­tica de Oriente Medio era diferente de la actual. En ello radica uno de los puntos interesantes de este libro ya que se pueden contemplar desde una perspectiva histórica los orí­genes de muchos conflictos y problemas que se han desarrollado en estos sesenta años: los asentamientos judíos en Palestina, los primeros intentos de unidad musulmana, Arabia antes del boom del petróleo.
