James Sheeran

A lively telling of a young man's adventures during WWII as one of the 101st Airborne tells his story. He jumped as part of the D-Day invasion. Was captured with several of fellows and escaped as they were being transported to a German POW camp with one other member of his unit. They hid/ran from the Germans for months in France finding the village where his mother grew up and connecting with some people from her life before she moved to America. They eventually reconnected with Patton's Army and returned to England to reunite with the old unit. Sheeran could have gone home for the remainder of the war but talked his commander into letting him stay. He relates his participation in Operation Market Garden and then the battle of Bastogne.

Odd fact, the Army issued each parachuter three condoms to take with them on their D-day jump.… (meer)

Good story, well told of a paratrooper that fought in only three battles of WW2; D-Day, Arnhem, and Bastogne.
Captured on D-Day, he escaped from a prison train and spent 3 months with the Marquis, fighting, hiding and running. He returned to England and chose to rejoin his outfit who were taking part in Operation Market Garden, Montgomery's futile attempt to shorten the war. On his relief from Arnhem, the 101st were sent to Bastogne where they were a major force in the defense of that city during the Battle of the Bulge.

Jim Sheeran was another member of the "Greatest Generation" that left school to fight for their country's freedom and returned home when his job was done. His escape travels took him to his mother's home village where he met; and was welcomed and protected often by members of her extensive French family.… (meer)
