Guides to dissection of the cat and dog are of particular use to first year veterinary students, although students in undergraduate comparative anatomy courses also do cat dissections.

Shively's guide, published in 1985, has excellent, anatomical drawings of the pen- and- ink variety. However, the accompanying text is in typewriter font, more like one would expect of a desktop publication than a professional publication. At this point, there are multiple dissection guides available of much better quality than this book. Among them is the "Guide to the Dissection of the Dog" by Howard E.
