Edwin "Bud" Shrake was born in Fort Worth, Texas on September 6, 1931. He served in the Army and received a degree in English and Philosophy from Texas Christian University. He was a sports writer for Fort Worth and Dallas newspapers before becoming a roving correspondent for Sports Illustrated. He toon meer was the author of several novels and three nonfiction books including Blessed McGill, Strange Peaches, Land of the Permanent Wave, and Harvey Penick's Little Red Book. He also wrote under the pen name of Bud Shrake. He wrote several screenplays including Nightwing, Kid Blue, and Songwriter. He died of cancer on May 8, 2009 at the age of 77.
