Over de Auteur

Born on the isle of Lefkas, Sikelianos studied law at Athens but abandoned it without completing his degree. In 1907 he wrote the long poem that established his reputation, The Visionary, and also married his first wife, Evelyn Palmer, of Bar Harbor, Maine. He and "Eva" spent much of the next toon meer quarter of a century reviving ancient Greek arts and traditions, and even trying to establish a new Delphic religion. During the German occupation of Greece in World War II, Sikelianos helped many people, especially Jews, survive. During that time he wrote and clandestinely circulated his Akritic Songs, poems of resistance. Much of his other poetry fuses Christian and pagan elements or recreates a Dionysiac spirit in rapturous, lofty language. (Bowker Author Biography) toon minder
