Growing up in Australia I found the English cricket idea of making distinctions between the classes, including having separate change rooms, ludicrous. That the division into "Gentleman" (those of independent wealth) and "Players" (the rest of us) lasted into the 1960s is even more bizarre, as was the rule that amateurs (gentlemen) got their initials listed in scorebooks but professionals (players) were only listed by their surname.
"The players" covers the history of how such a situation came to be, and tracks how professional players were regarded by the lords and gentlemen that ran cricket, and Sissons nicely points out the hypocrisies in the system, in particular the fact that in some cases amateurs made more money than the professionals, as amateurs could charge for expenses and the professionals were on a set salary.… (meer)

"Cricket and Empire" is certainly not the worst I have read on Bodyline and Ric Sissons goes beyond the usual facile coverage of the sporting event that apparently almost severed diplomatic relations between Australia and England.
