This book offers a nice smattering of Door County history, plenty to satiate a casual Door County fan. The text primarily focuses on the area's history, but also touches on geology, shipping, and agriculture. Most of the book is written in bits of information and anecdotes making for an easy read. This was just what I was looking for - not necessarily a deep dive into any one topic and not a modern-day tour guide, but a gentle historical overview. I obtained the digital copy of this book and was dismayed when I found it was not compatible with my e-reader. Instead, I read it on my computer, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise as I found myself frequently switching between the book, online maps, and image searches. Seeing 360° landscape views and photos of the shipwrecks and lighthouses augmented the experience of the book. This is not to take away from the book, such media is beyond its scope, but to provide a heads up to anyone else who may stumble across this humble review that they may want be prepared to see more of the many features this book describes. Overall, this is a great primer on Door County history and having this knowledge would greatly enhance a trip made to the peninsula.… (meer)

I loved this book as much as I loved Marshall Field's. This book gives a great look at a great Chicago institution. This book reminded me of my love for Marshall Field's and my sadness at its replacement by Macy's (I'm still bitter over that and refuse to shop at Macy's). For any Chicagoan this will bring back memories and put a smile on your face.

Chicago Calamities is a quick book to read. It recounts some of the most infamous disasters of the windy city such as the Great Fire and the Haymarket Square riots but also some that are much less known like the 1954 killer water surge. Each disaster has its own short chapter and pictures. Overall, it's a good jumping off point in finding topics to read further on.
