Sphrantzes supplies an eye-witness of the fall of the City. His account of the final battle is taken from a longer version of this chronicle, admitting some additions from Melissenos, Makarios. Still it remains very much the most popular account. If you are researching the event, this is the most common starting place. Sadly there do not seem to be Ottoman sources for this event.

This is an eyewitness account of the final years, final days of the Byzantine Empire. The Fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks was completed on May 29 1453. Years of decline had led to the point. The gradual erosion of the empire to the Turks and Italians had left nothing more than the capital city and a handful of outlying lands.
Not surprisingly, this account is biased toward the Greek side of the struggle. Unfortunately it was written several years after the events, thereby allowing the actual details to fade as well as fester.… (meer)
