- In 1873 he entered Pleasant Site Academy, which he attended two terms. He completed his education in Mars Hill College, in which institution he afterward taught one year. His mind was opened to the truth in 1868, through the preaching of T. B. Larimore, who has since become one of our most noted evangelists. He was baptized by J. H. Holbrook, July 25th, 1875. He preached his first sermon, June 25th, 1876. After preaching extensively through Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Mississippi, he came to Texas in 1881, and settled with the church at Paris, where he preached two years.
During the summer of 1883 he held camp-meetings in Western Texas under a large tabernacle tent.
He was editor of the Old Path Guide 1880, he was associated with F. G. Allen in publishing the Old Path Guide, and traveled extensively in the interest of this paper and increased its circulation. In November, 1889, he became one of the editors of the Gospel Advocate.

Biographies and Sermons door F. D, Srygley
I have acquired an appreciation for the literature and style of communication of that era. It is very concise and does not levy a bunch of jabberwocky, as does the discourse of today. Srygley generates a plethora of thought as he brings to bear, all of the rich histories we have in our possession. I have found a couple of new champions out of the era which can and should be emulated today...
One has to wonder how much of this book really by T. W. Caskey (1816-1896), how much is by the author, F. D. Srygley, and how much is pure fiction. Regardless of the answer, the author depicts details about the lives of poor white (and to a degree, black) people in “Dixie” (at least some rural portions of Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi, prior to and during the Civil War) that I did not know about.
Of course slavery was discussed, but not from the viewpoint that it was wrong, but that some slave owners were nice to their slaves and some were not. The author contended that poor mountain people did not think of voting for secession as voting for slavery, but states rights (p. 334f).
The author related that after Caskey enlisted in the CSA army as a chaplain, he was referred to as “the fighting parson,” but really, little by way of details are provided of his service in the war. He did state “The war was a mistake and a failure.” (p. 353)
Caskey and the author, Srygley were members of the churches of Christ, but little or nothing is provided regarding that faith group in the book.
I read the entire book and am glad to have learned some things about “Dixie,” but overall was disappointed that I didn't learn more about the Stone-Campbell religious heritage. The book includes a number of sketches that enhance the book some. There is no index. The book is available online from Google.… (meer)

Well-written late 19th century work offering glimpses into lives and lifestyles of Northwest Alabama preachers. Focuses on the life and work of noted preacher Theophilus Brown Larimore and the Mars Hill Bible School he operated from his farm near Florence. It gives the reader a greater appreciation for the work of preaching in those "frontier" days.
