Un anno prima della caduta del muro di Berlino un pentatleta della Germania dell'Est fugge dal "paradiso" marxista e approda negli Stati Uniti. Qui fa una vitaccia, ma il suo datore di lavoro lo aiuta a rimettersi in forma. Senonché, c'è il suo ex allenatore che si è messo in testa di farlo fuori e, da agente della Stasi, si è trasformato in neonazista. Il piano criminale è destinato allo scontato fallimento. C'è ben poco da dire su questo film che mescola lo sport, la politica e lo spionaggio: non si salva nessuno, né Dolph Lundgren, l'Ivan Drago di "Rocky IV", né David Soul, protagonista del telefilm "Starsky e Hutch". Dopo aver vinto la medaglia d'oro nel Pentathlon, l'atleta della DDR Eric Brogar ( nel film interpretato da Dolph Lundgren, il mitico pugile Sovietico "Ivan Drago" di Rocky), ragazzone di muscoli e tenacia ma anche di buon cuore e solidarietà, scappa dalla Germania Est alla volta dell'Occidente, raggiungendo la agognata libertà negli Usa. Caduto in disgrazia negli anni, riprende grinta e gioia di vivere e di riprendere lo sport a poco a poco ma inesorabilmente. Ma deve fare purtroppo i conti con il suo ex allenatore della Germania Est, che dopo la caduta del muro nel 1989, è ora negli Usa, riciclatosi come uomo chiave di un'organizzazione neonazista che sta progettando un attentato durante il discorso di un rabbino in favore della tolleranza, ed ha intenzione di "vendicarsi" del suo ex allievo scappato rapendolo ed usandolo come esca.… (meer)

What to say about this book that reads like an extended article for Vanity Fair? The parts that outline the history of teh aviation business as it moved into the age of the jet, the jumbo 747 and the Concorde are very interesting indeed. But then there is the writing in obsessive detail about celebrities and scandals from fifty and sixty years ago, and one has to wonder, is anyone really interested?

Author William Stadiem is especially enamored with Igor & Oleg Cassini, who traded on their dubious European titles to fame and fortune - at least for a while - and he manages to squeeze one of both of their names into each chapter whether it's relevant or not. Again, does anyone care anymore?

The book is also riddled with historical inaccuracies that should have been corrected if any kind of editing had been done on the copy (e.g. The Duke of Windsor did NOT become King Edward VIII; it was the other way around). I suppose this can be a fin book if you're amused by the antics of Euro-trash in the 1950's & 1960's and titillated by how they to bilk the American establishment, but these days the money and the accompanying are much bigger… (meer)
