Welp, I'm DNF-ing this one at 54% because of egregious character action. I was already having some trouble with it, but man, this is just a big ol' nope for me.

4.5

I’m a little tempted to round it up, because this was just so lovely and heart-meltingly romantic, and there was such a beautiful human-and-horse bond here that it just about brought tears to my eyes!

Tucker started out as a bully and an asshole — I admit I didn’t remember him from book 1, until Cal helpfully popped up and provided an explanation — but his behavior was somewhat erratic, and considering his past friendship with Nate, I knew there was more to him than met the eye… I was right, and the explanation broke my little heart.

Man, these cowboys sure know how to melt a girl’s heart… After breaking it first, of course!

While contemporary romance has never been my go-to genre, I enjoy it every once in a while. This was a recommendation from one of my new friends — thank you! — and a welcome break from my usual fare of fantasy and historical novels.

Down Low was a really good second-chance romance, angsty and sexy in all the right places. The writing was solid. I liked the little flashbacks at the beginning of each chapter, but it’s a shame the whole story was told from Cal’s POV. I wouldn’t mind knowing some of Eli’s thoughts, but then again, that probably would have clashed with that ‘strong and silent’ vibe he had going on!

The chemistry between Cal and Eli was downright explosive.

Frustratingly good

I liked this. A lot. At times it was grindingly slow paced. That seemed to add to the tension of what felt like a tug of war. Single POV kept it from earning five stars. I am keen to see which secondary characters get their own books.

I am really loving this series. The stories are intriguing and well written. I’ve been captivated from the beginning. In this book we get to know Reese more which I was glad about. He was a great friend to Val and it was good to see him take care of himself and find love. Matt was a great fit for him. I loved this and can’t wait to read some of the free shorts to go along with this.

I really enjoyed this. Elliot was a hotshot lawyer who moved to non-profit work after realizing that he didn't want to continue to sacrifice his ethics and soul in the world he was in. Lucas was a former convict who is trying to turn his life around. He has been doing well, but he still struggled with believing that he has self worth. The two guys were exactly what the other needed and they learned a lot from each other. Where we see both guys seemingly doing well in their world, it was nice to see their insecurities and work through them. I liked the Cabrini Law office staff, and I can't wait to read more about them. Excellent story and relatable, fun, and lovable characters.

Such an excellent story. I loved the first book, and this held up to my expectations. The writing was great and the story kept me on my toes. I loved the character of Maks. He was fun to read and root for. Loved this.

I thought that Matthew was really brave, and really strong. He made some really difficult choices to do what he thought was right, even though it really kinda ripped him to bits. I really hated his father, not as much as Matthew, but it's way up there.

JD had his own issues, and I thought that he was a pretty good man, even with the crap that he had to deal with. I think that it was good that Matthew had him in his pocket.

Reese

As with all the books in this series, I really like Matthew and Reese’s story. They were both broken men who felt they didn’t deserve happiness, until they found each other.

St John's Risk Assessment makes an impressive start to the Cabrini Law series. A superb mix of characters to love and hate, and of emotions that make you cringe with their honesty and brutality.
