She graduated with first class honours in journalism from Carleton University in 1981. She was president of Hi-Rise Communications Inc., with operations in Ottawa and Montreal and was honoured as one of the Top 40 Business Women under 40 in Ottawa. Diane, her husband and their three sons circumnavigated the globe in their 42-foot boat for four years. In addition to writing 211 columns for the Ottawa Citizen during their adventure, Diane authored The Voyage of the Northern Magic, A Family Odyssey, a Canadian bestseller.

Diane Stuemer's articles about her family's trip around the world ran weekly in our local paper. Unlike most people I know, I didn't read them. So, I came to this book already knowing the about Diane's tragic death and the subsequent attack on Herbert by their son, Jonathan. I think that coloured my perspective as I was reading...knowing that things did not go well for the family after their return to Canada made me question whether the parents acted responsibly by taking three young boys away for so long. There is no doubt the boys learned a lot on their trip; there is no doubt that Diane and Herbert were good parents who loved their children. Yet, they were not experienced sailors, putting the family at considerable risk. Removing the boys from the socialization that school provides them for so long must have affected their ability to integrate with their peers and deprived them of many of the supports they would otherwise have had to deal with the death of their mother. Hindsight is perfect and I'm not trying to judge the family....just trying to better understand their story.

Diane is a great writer....I only wish there were more pictures!… (meer)
