Suan Rubin Suleiman, a professor of French at Harvard University, fled from Budapest as a child in 1949. She later returned to Hungary and wrote Budapest Diary as a result. Suleiman is the C. Douglas Dillon Professor of the Civilization of France and professor of comparative literature at Harvard. Her most recent books are the co-edited volumes After Testimony: The Ethics and Aesthetics of Holocaust Narrative for the Future (2012) and French Global: A New Approach to Literary History (2010). Other books include Crises of Memory and the Second World War (2006; in French as Crises de mémoire, 2012), Risking Who One Is: Encounters with Contemporary Art and Literature (1994), Subversive Intent: Gender, Politics, and the Avant-Garde (1990), Authoritarian Fictions: The Ideological Novel as a Literary Genre (1983), and the memoir Budapest Diary: In Search of the Motherbook (1996). She is currently writing a book on Irène Némirovsky and the “Jewish Question” in France.
