This is a book about a little lamb who is following around a butterfly asking it many questions. When the butterfly attempts to leave a storm comes and puts a stop to his leaving. The lamb helps the butterfly until the sun comes out and dries the butterflies wings. Now the butterfly would like to stay but has to migrate South for winter. It's a cute little story for young children. The story is by Arnold Sundgaard but the pictures are by Eric Carle. This book serves as a good model for working together as two people to produce a really good book.

This book tells the tale of two characters who come from completely different walks of life. Both of the characters can't imagine how the other lives until they must work together in a time of need. The two become friends and learn an abundance from one another.

The lamb and the butterfly is filled with beautiful pictures. The lamb wants to be friends with the butterefly and asks him to stay. The lamb is really confused on how the butterfly sleeps where it wants, goes where it wants, and does not follow its mother. When he asks the butterfly to stay with him the butterfly cannot, because he must go south to aviod the cold.

I thought this was an okay book; I had mixed feelings after reading it. I loved the pictures. Not only were they by Eric Carle, who is known around the world for his many highly original and beautiful pictures, but also they enhanced the story and appropriately match the text. For example, every time the butterfly lands on a flower, the flower takes up the whole page, but the butterfly is still the focus. I also like how the pictures look like they are made with different textures. I was not impressed by the storyline and it did not interest me and make me want to keep reading. Even though the writing was organized, flowed, and was paced well, I just would not pick up this book and read it again, or read it to anyone else. The central message of this book is that you cannot make someone stay, if they do not want to stay. Even though the lamb thought the butterfly was better off with him, the butterfly did not agree. At the end of the book the butterfly explains, “Please don’t think me ungrateful,” said the Butterfly to the Lamb. And spreading his wings in the splendid act of flight, he zigged and he zagged and he ziggety zagged and soon was lost from sight.

Genre: Fantasy

Style: 5 stars

Review: A young lamb meets and butterfly and asks him to join the flock of sheep. Sadly she learns that butterflies travel around for their life. This book is a good example of fantasy because the writing that focuses on topics or events that cannot take place in our world.

Media: acrylic painting and paper collage

This book is very cute. It shows that two completely different types of people (but in the book's case animals) can be friends. It also teaches children to try to help their friends. This would be a great book for first/second graders. The pictures are bright and colorful as well!
