Let's say at the outset that this book likely will not appeal to you if you are not interested in theology. This quick read provides insight into the views of an open-minded protestant clergyman. Paul Rock shows his fascination with the current pope. The author, who is senior pastor of a Presbyterian church in Kansas City, seeks to find ways that both protestants and Catholics can learn from the examples of the man who was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio.

Rock, with two fellow pastors, compiled a sermon series out of which emerged this small book. Not just any protestant church would be a place where such a series would likely resonate. In this particular congregation, 75% of the elders have masters or doctoral degrees. It is a thinking flock.

The full title is Jesus, Pope Francis and a Protestant Walk into a Bar: Lessons for the Christian Church. The appeal of the current pope to pastor Rock probably stems from the charismatic character of Francis. That charisma was on full display during the recent papal visit to the United States. If you paid any attention to the pope's visit while he was here, you saw how close he gets to the people. It is hard to imagine prior popes mingling so closely with their fans, as this one does.… (meer)
