A couple of things stand out about this story separating it from most Fight Card stories. First, it's a story about a female MMA fighter in a genre that primarily features male athletes. Second, the setting is modern times rather than the forties and fifties. Rosie, in fact, has modern day problems of child custody battles and alcoholism. The fight matches are set forth vividly. The fights jay come alive in this story. The custody battle backstory felt a little over the top, but, in the end, it was little different than the battle to pay off the loan shark or to come up with the money to save the orphanage. Still an emotionally- charged battle.… (meer)

Tim Tresslar is a men's adventure/ spy fiction writer. His version of Fight Card is a bold departure from the norm of the series. Most Fight Card take the reader back in time to the 1940's and are filled with mobsters, dames, and murder. They often pair Hardboiled with pulp boxing. Blood Feud doesn't take place in the forties, it is a thoroughly modern tale that takes a former Iraq war battle-hardened CIA operative back into the fray against his greatest nemesis.
Sandwiched between great fight scenes -- MMA cage matches -- is a spy story and the war on terror.

It's a strong adventure and a worthwhile read.

Father Tim at St. Vincent’s in Chicago had a code he taught the boys: “Being a man had to do with standing up when you got knocked down, with always doing what you said you were going to do, and with fighting fair – never cheating, never taking what wasn’t yours, and never, never, backing down from a challenge. “Felony Flynn” left the orphanage, joined the Navy at fifteen, and joined the LAPD, taking his code with him. He boxed at night at the Olympic Auditorium and, during the day, he patrolled the streets in his black-and-white. This story is about where boxing and the mob met, where Mickey Cohen sat ringside, hoping to control the fights and the gambling. Flynn, not only wouldn’t take a dive for Cohen, but challenged him at every opportunity.

This story is solidly set in the early fifties Los Angeles and is filled with historical references to Cohen and to Chief Parker. It is sort of a Black Dahlia meets Robert E. Howard’s boxing stories and is cynical, hardboiled, tough-nosed, and pure unadulterated pulp. It has boxing, corruption, mobsters, dirty tricks, distrust, and good old-fashioned fighting fun.

n "Felony Fists," readers were introduced to Patrick "Felony" Flynn, the fighting LAPD officer, and it was noted that he had a brother Mick off in the merchant marine. Here, Odom tells a tale about the battling Mick Flynn. Mick's ship just put into port in Havana, old Havana run by Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky. It's a Cuba of gambling and dives and zesty Cuban ladies. It's a Havana where a crew of sailors on shore leave can't help but run into trouble.

Mick is a great guy to have along in a bar fight, but can he stand up to Italian hoods who think they run the waterfront?

This book is just chunk full of sailors on leave, fist battles, all out brawls, a fiery romance, and the deadliest killing machine ever to set foot in a ring.
