I had to read this twice before I wrote my review. The quality f the writing and the material itself is of high quality. It was just not in a format that I would prefer when reading history. The format though does flow and does not detract from the material. I still am not sure if I should call this a biography, a ghost memoir or transcripts of an interview. It is a bit of all three.

The life of Maso is very interesting and the author does cover his enter nine decades in this text. We learn why his family immigrated to the USA and his education. This background helps to understand his situation once in the W.W II era army and his time in the Pacific Theater of War. When Maso speaks of his war time experiences they come alive to the reader. The bravery of these Japanese American soldiers is amazing. Their own families in the USA are in internment camps, they have nothing to return to after the war like other soldiers and the enemy may be a friend.

On top of the normal war time stress of serving on the front lines of a combat unit that faces fierce opposition. Maso also had to worry if he would be shot by his own troops. The author has written a informative biography of a Japanese American who not only served in the U.S. Army during World War II but also served in the Pacific theater. Sandra Vea style not only re-tales Masao’s story but also gives us a glimpse on how the information was obtained. The story is told in a manner that makes you wish to continue to read and shows respect to her subject. A very interesting life.
