A book about a girl who overcomes her fears of swimming with the help of her walrus imaginary friend. :) If your kids would get ideas from a book where a girl is afraid of a shark being in the pool, skip this one.

I wanted to give this a better review. So many children have a fear of the water. Or swimming. Or sharks. One of my biggest memories from childhood is freaking out at the movie Zeus and Roxanne where there are sharks in the ocean and I thought the dog was going to get eaten.

For the record, I still barely do shark movies. Although I finally watched JAWS and I thought that was plain ol' hokey. I kind of hated 47 meters down....because a shark cage is my worst nightmare. Anyway

This is another book about tackling anxiety which, as a person who struggles with anxiety, I appreciate it! The subtle nuances of being busy during the week (which helps distract from the anxiety) is one that I can relate to. Still, I don't fully get why the other character was a walrus. I didn't love the end. Yes, we knew that Lottie would get in the water but still.......

What a delightful story. Peggy is uprooted from her safe little yard and doesn't think twice, she turns it into an adventure. The illustrations are what attracted me to this charming chicken story, they are beautiful and fun!!
Can you take on the world a bravely as Peggy?

Lottie is afraid of the shark in the swimming pool, but a walrus called Walter helps her overcome her fear by listening (and singing a charming song: Humbelly doo, lumbelly la, loopy loo!).

I hate this book. Actually although I'm tempted to go with the snarky rejoinder review, it's more accurate to say I was bored by this book, and annoyed by the religiosity of the xmas imagery. Angels, mangers, blah blah blah.

"Lottie & Walter" takes the reader on an adventure at the local swimming pool. Lottie is afraid to swim because there is a shark waiting for her at the bottom of the pool. The other kids don't see the shark. After swim lessons, Lottie meets a new friend named Walter the Walrus. Lottie and Walter do everything together for the next week. When its time for swim lessons again, Lottie is still afraid to jump in. But, Walter encourages her and she overcomes her fear. I enjoyed reading this book because it is a story many children can relate to. It teaches them that we can face our fears with the help of a friend.

Peggy, a black hen, lives a nice quiet life in the suburbs, tucked away in her chicken coop. She has a routine until one day she gets blown away by the wind and deposited in the middle of a city. She is completely out of her element as she has never seen such things before. It’s busy, loud, interesting and tiring. Fortunately, she recognizes her pigeon friends and is able to find her way back home. However, because of that experience, Peggy knew how to find her way back to the city on the train and took advantage of this knowledge for some more adventures.

This is a great book for young readers that shows the advantages of traveling to new places and learning about new things. It’s ok to step outside of your comfort zone to have a new experience. You will find your way back home. I picked this book up because I thought it could be a really good book for an elementary IB program. It’s global in that it touches on traveling and the setting is in Australia. So, for US readers, it will expose them to a new part of the world. They will see in the pictures some differences and some similarities to US cities. There is a connection to the IB Learner Profile in that Peggy is a risk-taker. It would also appeal to readers who like animals (or birds) as main characters. It could also be a good book to learn about communities with. Readers will see illustrations about what it is like to live in the suburbs and to visit the city.

The illustrations are done in beautiful water colors. They are soft and muted to show that the city is not a scary place to visit. Just busy. The illustrator created some watercolor images meant to look like Polaroid photos. These are like vignettes within the larger story. These photos show Peggy’s routine and her emotions. It will keep young readers entertained. This is a great purchase for any elementary school library or public library.

Well. I was reading along, thinking 'neat style of artwork, little bits of cleverness in design, but meh.

Then I got to the end and realized 'duh' the metaphor for all of us, especially me. Don't be wedded to routine, don't just watch life pass you by. Instead, get out, go someplace new, have adventures, don't be afraid to ask for help, make friends...!

So, it gets the fourth star. But still, I don't think it's entirely special and I won't recommend that you hunt it down."

Peggy is a chicken who eats breakfast with pigeons. One day a big gust of wind swept her into the city. She saw so many new things but she was eventually ready to go back home. She saw somebody carrying sunflowers that looked like the ones that grew at her house. She followed them and got on a train. When she got off the train, she saw the pigeons again. The pigeons lead her back to her house. Overall this was a very cute book that I would share with my students.

"Peggy: A Brave Chicken on a Big Adventure" is a story about a determined little chicken who does whatever it takes to find her way home. One day, while she was in her yard, she got swept away by the wind and landed in the middle of the busy city. While there she learns and discovers new things and uses her wit and intelligence to find her way home, with the help of some pigeons of course.
The illustrations are crisp and delightful which appeals to any age. This has a great message about going with the flow, trusting in your abilities and not panicking. I would 100% use this in the classroom to perhaps discuss what is best to do in a similar situation (if they would get separated from their parents in a store). Besides, who doesn't love a good story about chickens?½

PEGGY by Anna Walker is a story that describes what it is like to go off and do something new. Peggy the chicken ate breakfast, played in her yard, and watched the pigeons. One day she was doing just that when a storm blew her into the city. This was something she had never experienced before, but she ended up going along with it. She saw things she had never seen before, watched things she never watched before and tasted things she has never tasted before. This book could inspire students to go out and try new things just like Peggy did. The illustrations in the book were water color paint that gave the story much more of a meaning. It added to the story because it gave the reader something to picture while reading the words.

It's a book about a chicken, so of course I will pick it up. BONUS... I love the story and it's illustrations! The author's website gives some wonderful background detail to the book. I wish I could get all of her illustrated books here in the U.S.
