“But in London he saw a new response to tragedy: It was not skinned or stuffed; no one kept it in a box, preserving it like an injured bird. People unfastened it, let it fall in the gutter, and walking away, determined not to look back. Instead of adorning themselves with it, letting it define them, people let the wounds heal over and, touching their scars like talismans, set out to rebuild their world” (122).

This is a story about lonely souls in search of satisfaction and purpose, finding fulfillment, belonging. It’s also about reconciling faith in people and faith in God with life’s—often crummy—circumstances. This is a story about two couples who are brought together during difficult times—their own personal demons cause problems but also the turmoil of a 1960s America causes problems. Charles & Lily: faith and grief. James & Nan: doubt and certainty. Through these lenses it’s easy to see how these things impact each of us as we find our place in this world. Reading this book was like a slow, small seduction of character—I thought this would be a four-star read throughout because it’s very character-driven (so slow in some places) and these characters, especially Lily, are infuriating, but then towards the end, I realize I’m crying and care so much for each of these people. Didn't think I'd enjoy this as much as I did. Well done.

Would have given 3.5 stars if that were an option. Just something unsettling about the dynamics of the couples. I enjoyed the build up of the relationships. Read upon recommendation of a book that had a long lasting but not fairytale marriage. I appreciated the different kinds of strength each of the female protagonists had. Didn't leave me longing for more, but was better than middle of the road.

Well done I guess but not my kind of novel (read it for my book club). Mostly I didn’t find the characters interesting (I did like Lily). And way too much religion for my taste.
