Pearl missed out on going to the police academy (and other things) to give birth to and raise her son while living with and working for her mum's cafe. That was over twenty years ago, and now she is a private investigator (still working at the cafe) and in a relationship with DCI Mike McGuire, currently on leave due to a casted sports injury and crutches. There seems to be some strife over the demands of a wealthy/entitled newcomer from London regarding things at the town allotment, but everyone is flabbergasted when Pearl finds the woman's body in the composting drum. Now many of the friends are under scrutiny by the temporary DI (who's a real Bozo) and Pearl is in his sights. Excellent read!
Would I buy this one? No, but now I've bought book 1 in series and have the rest on Wish List!
I think that Jennifer Kirby does a great job as narrator with good differentiation of the main characters.

Whitstable Pearl Mystery #10… (meer)

This is the second Whitstable Pearl Mystery and it’s just as wonderful as the first. This one is set right before Christmas and it’s Pearl’s busiest time at the Restaurant compounded by her obligations to her family and the town. What she doesn’t need is a murder to solve, but things don’t go as planned, and when mean spirited Christmas cards are sent to some residents, and then someone dies, she is pulled into the investigation to find out if they are related. Of course DCI Mike McGuire is back and their attraction to each other doesn’t keep them from searching for clues.… (meer)

Pearl Nolan hat nicht nur zusammen mit ihrer Mutter ein Fischrestaurant im malerischen Küstenort Whitstable, sie betreibt neuerdings auch noch ein Detektivbüro. Als Vincent „Vinnie“ Rowe, ein Austernfischer, der zufällig auch noch Pearls Lieferant ist, tot neben seinem Boot hängt mit der Ankerkette um seinen Fuß, kann Pearl gar nicht anders als ermitteln. Kommissar McGuire geht allerdings von einem Unfall aus. Bald gibt es einen weiteren Todesfall.
Pearl hat vor langer Zeit mal kurz bei der Polizei gearbeitet und ihr großer Traum ist es, Kommissarin zu sein. Mangels Chancen, dass sich das noch erfüllt, macht sie ihre Detektei auf. Nun ermittelt sie mit viel Engagement, aber keinen Erfahrungen in Whitstable. Dass McGuire nicht gerade begeistert ist, als sie sich so reinhängt, ist klar. Pearl hat allerdings den großen Vorteil, den Ort und die Bewohner gut zu kennen und trägt somit viele Informationen zusammen, allerdings sind ihre Schlüsse oft sehr abstrus. So nähern sich McGuire und Pearl beruflich immer mehr.
Obwohl sich die Spannung bei diesem Krimi in Grenzen hält und die Lösung am Ende ziemlich plötzlich kommt, hat es doch viel Spaß gemacht, das Buch zu lesen, denn die Geschichte lebt von den beteiligten Personen. Bei der Familie von Pearl geht es manchmal recht dramatisch zu, aber mit einer Portion Humor lässt sich jedes Chaos meistern. Aber auch die Örtlichkeiten wurden so ausführlich beschrieben, dass ich mir ein gutes Bild machen konnte.
Ein unterhaltsamer Krimi mit wenig Spannung.… (meer)
