Travel in Medieval Europe was difficult and dangerous. Despite the difficulties, thousands of people embarked on pilgrimages to the top three destinations (Santiago, Rome and the Holy Land) as well as more local shrines. Diana Webb pulls together the crumbs of information about those pilgrims to provide a very readable and outstanding overview of Medieval pilgrimage. She uses documents from the pilgrims themselves as well as archeological data like the dispersion of pilgrim badges to tell the story. Scholarly and adequate, but I found John Ure's treatment less dry and more involving.
