An interesting account of the author's early years in the North East of Scotland. Mildly irritating is Mr. Webster's oft expressed affection and pride for his own little corner of the world presented as if the rest of the world has missed out by not having had the opportunity to grow up there. These unfortunate "others" have been blind both to the idyll of the environment and to the quality of the folk it produced. This irritation is however offset by the wealth of local dialect expressions used, reminding the reader of the increasing homogenisation of the English language.
