I enjoyed this book immensely. It was a wonderful story that took me back to Prince Edward Island that I visited this summer. I loved the connection to Anne of Green Gables and and the story of a successful Home Child. Not all were so lucky. I looked forward to reading more about home children. I came across this little book for sale in a motel in Cavendish. The cover was attractive and appealed to me as a fan of Anne of Green Gables.
When I read the Anne books, it had been hard to decide how much was real and how much was from Lucy Maude Montogomery's imagination. This book is the well-documented story of a real-life orphan, the niece of the author, and after I read Ellen, it was easy to see how real Anne was to Montgomery. The events in Anne's life were fictional, but the story is set in Cavendish, and Montgomery made that little community come so much to life in her books. Ellen is a good little read as an accompaniment to the Anne books.… (meer)
