Mai Fagan returns home to care for her mother. Mai’s mother, unable to care for herself or negotiate the stairs in her home because of a broken leg must find another place to live. In the process of house hunting, Mai meets Brit Twitchell, a very well preserved man, old enough to be her father. Mai is married ”in a way” to Brian who deserted her shortly after their marriage four years earlier. Not knowing if Brian is dead or alive, Mai has just let the marriage remain intact.

In the midst of settling her mother in with an elderly aunt and neighbor, selling three houses and moving three households, Mai experiments with a fledgling flea marked store.
