No one wants to give a less than five star review for a story like this. Gary and Bonnie Witherall were called to missionary work in Lebanon. They had both been interested in and involved in evangelism for a number of years and were enthusiastic and passionate about the work they were called to. Bonnie in particular became involved in ministering in a women's clinic where she shared the Gospel when possible and handed out Bibles and tracts. They were obviously working mostly with Muslims. The work was dangerous. They knew that they were placing their lives on the line and may end up making the ultimate sacrifice. But they did it anyway, for Jesus.

Tragically, Bonnie was murdered doing the work she loved. It is assumed that she was killed for the work she was doing--that seems to be a logical conclusion considering the circumstances. The world's media was suddenly focused on their work in Lebanon and the terrible crime. Bravely, Gary took the opportunity to offer public forgiveness to the unknown attackers. He describes his personal struggle leading up to this decision.

The book itself wasn't particularly well written. The author tells the story beginning at childhood and relays how he and Bonnie met and how they were called into mission. There is little about the actual work they were doing, mostly it is taken from short journal entries. I would have enjoyed hearing more of the stories about the local people, their lives and situations. Similarly, there is little about the investigation into the murder--maybe because it was limited. There are also strong ecumenical views expressed--the author believes that we are all united in Christ (including Catholics) and suggests we should all be working together.

This book is very short and in my view focuses on the wrong areas. However, this is a story of two people with hearts totally committed to the mission God had called them to do. They clearly loved the people and desired to see them saved. Everything they did was with a view to sharing the Gospel, practical help was a secondary focus.

I recommend this book to Christians interested in mission and those who are struggling to forgive someone. The author's testimony proves that forgiveness is possible, through Jesus, even in the most difficult circumstances. There is no bad language or sexual content and the violence is not graphic.

True story of Bonnie and Gary Witherall who served with OM in Lebanon. Bonnie was murdered in Lebanon while serving there with OM. It's a 'true story of life lived in radical devotion to God.' Quite moving.
