A journalist and his wife drove around Australia in the late 1960s. Well almost, being 1960s Sydneysiders they skipped Victoria and Tasmania.They were more interested in the sparsely populated outback areas anyway. They visited cattle stations and the Woomera Rocket Range. An unofficial White Australia policy still prevailed in the 1960s, and aboriginal assimilation was a governmental goal. Some things don't change. Aboriginal stockmen were being consistently and 'legally' underpaid in the Northern Territory until a law change in 1968; station owners insisted that raising their wages would put them all out of work but it didn't happen.

The author didn't intend for his book to be a deep analysis of Australian culture and it isn't, but it is an interesting snapshot of the country at a particular point in time.… (meer)
