CHICKEN LITTLE by M.J. York is at the 3rd Grade reading level --about mid-year. It's Common Core Aligned and CC Suggested and has 781 words in a good sized font.

This Favorite Children's story version of CHICKEN LITTLE is the more grim telling. Chicken Little involves Henny Penny and Goosey Loosey and then Turkey Lurkey in her foolishness, which means that they all disappear into Fox's den.

There's a section at the end which helps children to interpret the story if they can't on their own. It says things like, "[I]f only Chicken little had only looked on the ground around her, perhaps she would have the acorn that had just hit her and she wouldn't have been so unreasonably afraid."

Teri Weidner's illustrations are classically styled and very attractive. There's one on every page or other page except for right in the middle of the book where there's a strange two-page void. Poor Turkey Lurkey must wait to be shown.

This is a nice quick book for older readers who might want to revisit this tale.… (meer)
