3.5 rounded up. This book had a slow start but overall I enjoyed it. Once it got going the feeling of the story reminded me of A Map of Salt and Stars.

A fascinating premise is eroded by more telling than showing. Zapata's story has enormous potential, but the writing craft is the weakest part (the epilogue left a sour taste in my mouth). I'm most annoyed about the squandered promise more than anything.
