Procured eclectically at garage sales and as gifts, my best books have a little bit more than "moderate shelf wear". These are the books that have accompanied me up the favorite tree, on long trips, and through many childhood nights when I should have been sleeping. And some of the books are extra-special: they are not only mine, but were another's before me, and another's before that! The legacies of the books are sometimes as captivating as the stories themselves.
