Secrets of Eden was well written and easy to read (1), I found the story line extremely depressing. The story is about a family living in Haverhill (1), Vt and in the parish of Stephen Drew the pastor there. The family is a dysfunctional family as Dad is an alcoholic and wife beater. Thy have a 15 year old daughter (1), Book Club selection (1), Indian culture (1), Powerful women (1), new author (1), murder scenes and memories of abuse. This for me was way over the top and very unnecessary. While angels and the comfort of angels is meant to play a big role in the story (1), huntington's disease (1), sweet love story (1), Ethopia (1), Short Sories (1), Amish mystery (1), Japanese interment (1), India (1), Armenian genocide (1), Katie who has grown up witnessing the abuse. This all in itself is depressing. The part that makes this book extremely depressing is the lengths that Bohjalian takes in writing (very descriptively) about acts of abuse (1), even previous readers of his stories. I would not want anyone else subjected to the tasteless accounting of the story. (1), they were completely overshadowed by brutality.Though I won’t reveal the ending here (1), profeminist (1), John Brown/civil war (1), World War II Java (1), Chick lit-esque (1), Amish family living (1), Paris 1860 (1), the question of love (1), sappy story (1), futuristic Scarlet Letter (1), The Berlin Wall (1), South Carolina 1954 (1), eager for them to survive. I was anxious for each situation the slaves and Lavina found themselves involved in and despised the brutality and those that inflicted it.I devoured the Kitchen House and was sorry to put it down at it's end. I highly recommend (1), I did come to the correct conclusion fairly easily another surprise for me since in Bohjalian’s other books the ending was never obvious.I probably won’t recommend this book to anyone (1), the years that shape him into who he is and who he will become. Marshall becomes the driving force of the pain and suffering of these people after he inherits the plantation at his father's death.The Kitchen House is masterfully written. I became totally (1), the activities of it's people and the actions of the brutal overseer are presented chapter by chapter in the different voices of the characters. The reader witnesses the abuses the Captain's son Marshall endures at the hand of his tutor. He is sexually ab (1), They raise her as their own and feels that she is part of their family. She loves each one of them and doesn't see the difference of black or white.The workings of the plantation (1), The Captain turns her over to his kitchen house staff of black slaves (1), The Kitchen House is a book about slavery but written from a different perspective than all other books written about this issue. It is written mostly from the approach of a white person. Lavina is indentured to a plantation/ship owner due to the fact tha (1), I will say I was disappointed and unhappy that I hung in there. I should have spent my time reading something else. This just wasn't for me. (1), the dig procedure and the political time could have been omitted or reduced. The book was 448 pages long and could have been adequately written in 200.Without revealing the ending (1), Africa; the book was way too heavy in details. I feel that the author wrote more from the historian point of view than from a novelists.There were several times when I almost put the book down. Then something regarding the relationship between Natalie and (1), Peter Watson who is a historian and research associate at McDonald Institute for Archaeolgy. When I read this information in the back of the book; it all became clear to me.
