Over mijn bibliotheek: I am a compulsive buyer of "very good" books - which means that at some level, heavily-marked up, dog-eared books are anathema. Though also at some level, I dislike a new book. Handling something that others have enjoyed must be part of it.
I really have no idea about a number. More than 1000, less than 5000, many still in boxes. I am not obsessive about cataloguing (maybe more so, now that I've joined LT) but I do love the way books furnish a room and any obsessiveness is lavished on the appearance of the shelves, and the books in them. Dominant areas of interest are the Middle East, SE Asia, and to a lesser extent India, including the entire gamut, from fiction through non.
Over mij: I have been buying mostly used books to take with me on sea voyages for over thirty years. Though I no longer work at sea, I continue to buy books in the same fashion. If I am lucky I read half the books I buy. There are fewer and fewer used books in my area and I am less mobile than I used to be so ABE has become my go-to place. Though I did discover that one of the locals which I assumed had gone under was still open. I walked out of there the other day with "The Memsahibs" (Pat Barr), a bird guide, and a handful of children's books for my daughter, including several "West Wind" - a fairly typical used book "haul."
