Hi, anyone have a copy of the Centipede Press Shadow of the Torturer or Claw of the Conciliator for sale? Thanks!
2jeromelucpaulin
Good luck! I've been looking for over 2 years for Shadow. Eventually got a PC edition that is signed but not numbered. A member here got one not long ago though.
3JustinTChan
> 2 Thanks for the wishes. Guess I will need them.
I am OK with any edition, unsigned, PC, or numbered! :)

Join the club, JustinTChan :) It is an interesting place (and considering that the third volume did not get sold out that fast, I really wonder where some of those copies are...)
5JustinTChan
My guess is that the people who would have bought the third book chose to go with the leather bound deluxe edition instead. Don't think it's a coincidence that when I bought a copy of Lictor four or five months ago it was #86 :). (deluxe edition limitation was 15 copies I think).
6jeromelucpaulin
I know Shadow was made into a Deluxe edition but not the next two. They weren't publicly announced, but I guess it would not have made sense to just release the first one as a Deluxe. As for the # you got, Jerad send them randomly unless you ask for a specific one.
8JustinTChan
Actually, according to the below website, it was the entire Book of The New Sun that was published deluxe. They claim to have copied it from Centipede. I don't know if that was changed, as I've never seen any mention of it, myself, on the Centipede site.
http://hoofandhide.wordpress.com/tag/new-sun/
Wish I had seen it at the time.

9JustinTChan
And according to that website, it was 14 copies. Makes it even weirder if it is random and Jerad just chose to send me #86.
10Goran
The website is talking about a Book of the New Sun omnibus by CP. I don't think I ever saw an omnibus offered on the site. Not sure how reliable that website is.
11jeromelucpaulin
I've seen that description somewhere else too that it was some kind of an omnibus. But on another forum (thedarktower.org) someone says he got the Deluxe Shadow of the Torturer (that guy have a full Centipede Press set). So I guess the omnibus is an error.
12JustinTChan
Or it was canceled.
Well, that gives me hope then. Maybe there will be more deluxe editions.

13Goran
I was under the impression that CP has a private list of customers who regularly purchase their deluxe editions which can run over a grand. I've only ever seen the Frankenstein novel advertised on their website as deluxe.
14jeromelucpaulin
Other deluxe have been advertised on the website recently like the reprint of Agonizing Resurrection by Ligotti (1750$), the new Hannes Bok (3000$), The Golem (1000$), Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1250$), Knowing Darkness and the Lovecraft artbook. I know Jerad said over a year ago that he'll only do Deluxe for his SF and Gothic series and some of the art books too.

Totally missed all those other ones. Wow. Funny how I never seem to see any of CP's deluxe editions on ebay. Would love to see exactly what they look like.

I know the deluxe for Frankenstein(2006) had a traycase and an extra suite of prints but the book itself was exactly the same.

Hey guys. Citadel is up(went ahead and pre-ordered). Pointed out to Jerad that the description is wrong, though. Half of it seems copied and pasted from sword of the lictor :).
20Goran
>18 JustinTChan:
Pre-ordered mine as well. I believe Jerad puts first right of refusal on those who've ordered the other books in the series to make sure we get the same edition. Kinda crappy that he didn't set a pre-order discount though :(

>19 the_bb: I think you'll find it's worth it. Love the 3rd volume, and
there's still Urth and Castle of the Otter to go. Also, Jerad did tell me that buyers of the previous volume do have (informal?) first rights to the next volume.
>20 Goran: Well, with the current state of the print market, I am amazed he manages to stay in business at all! So I don't mind the price
Also, I confirmed the leather bound deluxe editions are published in single volumes and totally, absolutely sold out forever. :(

Would love to be on the mailing list for CP's deluxe editions. Frankly I don't think specialty publishers like CP having much to worry about. They have a strong position in a niche but clearly growing market.

At last! Received my copy of Autarch. Unfortunately, it looks like there was an error. The illustration facing page 51 is supposed to match what's on the website (cacogens? aliens? don't know) In my copy at least, they are cut off completely. Only half an arm remains :(
25jeromelucpaulin
Don't think that's an error, I have the same. There's a lot of cropped images in this fourth book (more than the first three, if there was any). The full image can be found toward the end.
I still don't know if I like having a lot of cropped images. Feels like they tried put more images than needed for.

26JustinTChan
My mistake, the full illustration appears much later near the end of the book. It's confusing, b/c it happens a couple of times. A close-up detail shot of a different illustration appears but usually separated by quite a few pages from the wide shot one.
27Goran
Got my copy of Autarch as well. It never occured to me to take a look at the illustrations right away since I've come to rely on CP's high quality. Will need to take a look.
31JustinTChan
Yes, still waiting for a link. The one provided doesn't work.

I believe its a trilogy. I wonder of Jerad will do all three, perhaps illustrated like the Book of the New Sun?

33JustinTChan
I think I saw a link somewhere that confirms that it is illustrated. Perhaps the artist's website, can't remember what the the URL was. I forgot that it was a trilogy actually. Only read the first one.
34JustinTChan
Anyone know when The Forever War is coming up for pre-order? Last I heard it was supposed to be Dec. 23rd.....
35astropi
I think by the end of the month. Although it might be delayed. It will be awesome :)
By the way, the other "big release" that may have interested people is the signed limited edition of Stephen King's "The Shining" by Subterranean. Did anyone purchase it? The lettered edition was apparently $2500...dang! I wonder if people purchase a $2500 book because they enjoy it, or do they plan to resell it?

36JustinTChan
I purchased the gift edition. I wouldn't spend $2500 on a single Subterranean book. Very few books at that price point are going to go up in value especially when you consider that Sub Press 'deluxe' lettered editions/bindings tend to be virtually the same as their numbered editions. :p.
37Goran
>36 JustinTChan:
You're absolutely right (believe me, I ranted about SubPress's lettered editions a few years ago). However, Stephen King commands ridiculous prices in the after market so I really wasn't surprised to see the $2500 price tag. In any case, it is unsurprising to see the letter and limited editions were pre-sold-out the first day.

I'm curious why are signed Stephen King books so expensive? The gift edition for "The Shining" is $95 and the signed edition was $450 and the lettered $2500. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the gift edition is the same as the limited minus the signature? Or do they throw in some extra illustrations? Even if it does have some extra illustrations and a slipcase or whatnot, I can't imagine that would amount to an extra 370% in cost. As for the lettered edition, I have no idea why that is a whooping $2500! If it came with an original illustration by the artist, then that would be reasonable (still awfully expensive, but reasonable). At any rate, I guess King is just so popular that his books command such values.
39kdweber
>38 astropi: The $2500 edition does come with a signed print with "doodle" from the artist (original remarque).

As far as the better known fine presses go, the ranking for Price/Quality goes something like...
1)Folio Society
2)Centipede Press
3)Limited Editions Club
4)Easton Press
9999) Subterranean Press (excepting only A Song of Ice and Fire).
They are also the only publisher I know who regularly "finds" leftover copies of this or that publication
that their computerized inventory somehow missed.
Not hating, just liking less....

>40 JustinTChan: I'd add two more presses ahead of all of these with regards to Price/Quality:
1) Imprint Society (signed, limited editions, near LEC quality at near Heritage Press prices)
2) Heritage Press
Then I'd bump the LEC to 3rd since many of its volumes can be found for less than $50.
Since I price books by my total cost (price+tax+shipping) and since I live in the US, FS books are quite pricey (even used).
Note that IS, HP, and the LEC no longer exist and their books may only be bought used.

I'd second kdweber's list. I cataloged my library in a spreadsheet a few months back and was surprised to find that, on average, I had spend about $3 per volume MORE on FS than LEC.
I think the world's best book bargains are probably the earlier HP books, which were mostly printed letterpress (linotype, I think) on good paper, often featured hand-marbled paper on the boards or slipcases, included illustrations printed from the woodblock or stone, and can be easily be found for less than $10. Every time I drive down to Portland, I spend a few hours in Powell's and come home with a box full.

41> Yes, the list will clearly be location dependent since FS publications will generally be a better value, in terms of overall cost (including shipping), for those in the UK. Heritage Press and LEC on the other hand are likely to be a better value for those of us in the US.
In terms of the secondary market, I think the value will depend on your proximity to particularly good used bookstores and your willingness to spend vast amounts of time searching the stocks at said book stores. I have been able to find the occasional great deal on FS titles at used book stores (Wit and Wisdom of Oscar Wilde -- Fine in NF slipcase for $8), but I have limited time to search, though I do live fairly close to a number of good used book stores in the Washington DC area.
I'm not familiar with the Imprint Society. Will have to search for some of their titles on abebooks.

DCBlack - you absolutely must track down some IS books. "Fables by the Late John Gay" can be had for $20 and is illustrated by 60 woodcuts, printed from the block.
45astropi
Did anyone purchase any of the Centipede Press Cisco books, and if so, how are they? Not so much in terms of quality, but in terms of stories. Worth reading, exciting, etc?

>40 JustinTChan:
Agreed with your list. SubPress books are generally just normal hard covers. They do have some better then average books (I cherish my lettered hand bound edition of The Terror), but mostly they're just regular hard covers with a signature. The good thing is that they publish these signed editions in my favourite genre's, so what's a guy to do?!

And don't forget the Westvaco books--these are real gems, though as in the case of the IS, their choices are often rather, er, idiosyncratic.

41,44> after your recommendations, I searched for IS books on abebooks, and read more on the following thread:

Being interested in titles on nautical exploration, I purchased:
The private journal of Captain G. F. Lyon of H. M. S. Hecla: During the recent voyage of discovery under Captain Parry, 1821-1823
Lyon, Captain G. F; James A. Houston (intro and illus)
I look forward to receiving it, and possibly picking up more IS titles soon.

You picked a great one! I've been picking up IS titles here and there for a while, and Lyon's journal is one of my favorites. It also has a neat-looking spine (which matters, if I'm being honest) and it gets a lot of compliments on my shelf.

Took forever, but finally got my copy of Shadow and Claw! Thanks to Jerad. Best. Small. Press. Ever.
60jeromelucpaulin
Are they signed #ed JustinTChan? Which # if it is?
I got Shadow through Jerad long after it was sold out, it is a PC or prototype copy (no limitation page), but it's signed. Just like the Sword of the Lictor for sale right now on eBay.
I'm still looking for Shadow #24 though...

Forever War sold out. Took a bit longer than I thought, but not unexpected at all. Great book... except, I have to admit that I do not like the velvet covers. Other than that, I have no complaints.
62JustinTChan
I actually enjoy the feel. It's definitely better than plain, non-printed cloth :).
63kdweber
But will it last? Also, the medium just works better for Elvis and dogs playing poker. Any thoughts on there being no title on the spine of the book itself?
64JustinTChan
Wow...markup is one thing. But someone's got The Forever War up on Ebay for $1200 already. I hope it's not one of ya'll ;).
65astropi
Honestly, I would have preferred cloth over the velvet. I just think it looks cheap. I was surprised that there is no title on the spine of the book. I think that was a mistake, probably got overlooked by the publisher. Still, I don't think that's a big deal personally. I'm more annoyed about the velvet :P
I don't know who is selling it for $1200, but I did notice that someone sold a copy for over $500 recently. $1200 seems a bit high, but then again, this may be made into a movie soon by Ridley Scott. Actually, I thought it was quite awesome that Jerad managed to get him to sign!

Not sure if people still read this thread, but I have an extra copy of Claw if anybody is interested in making an offer. One is numbered, the other is PC. Feel free to offer for either one. Both signed. The only difference is the PC is signed on a transparent sheet instead of limitation page.
