Laytonwoman's 2013 Orange reading

Anticipating Orange January (I assume we're still calling it that, in spite of the prize's name change). I didn't get as far last year with my reading list as I had hoped. But the good news is, the books are still there, so I can carry on...

I hope to read these prize winners or contenders in 2013:

Song of Achilles
A Spell of Winter
The Night Watch and/or The Little Stranger

Three of these are left over from last year's intentions...but let's see how I do. New year, new start.

I will be reading Song of Achilles along with you provided my number comes up in the Library queue soon enough.
I hope you love the other three as much as I did. A Spell of Winter was a solid 5 * read for me while the other two were 4 & 4 1/2 * respectively.
I have you starred and will be checking back in January.

Ive read all four on your list, and all are good. I am partial to the Sarah Waters' novels as you can't go wrong with her books.

Yes, Elizabeth...I like Sarah Waters too. I've read Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet, and enjoyed both of them.

I have only read the two Sarah Waters books you have listed above but I really like how she writes and am looking forward to Fingersmith this year and may read Tipping the Velvet for AV/AA.

And raider, when Jill took her little survey seems most of the responses were as you feel. Keep it Orange January and Orange July. After all, what is in a name? A lot!

Well, January threw me a curve, and I didn't do the reading I intended. I may still get to Achilles in the near future, but I'm playing it by ear for a while.

Oh Linda, I just finished it early yesterday but was so wrung out that I couldn't write a review at the time. Am hoping to do that today or tomorrow. I also hope that you enjoy it as much as I did. Not having studied Greek Mythology nor the Greek Tragedies, I was afraid of this one but now I want so badly to dive in to The Iliad. Just thinking that I will get to the challenge books that I wish to read in February before I begin. I am excited to read it after having read The Song of Achilles.

I know almost nothing about Greek Mythology so I was a little sceptical but I loved it too!

Oh my goodness, Belva...you're right! And I haven't been thinking about it at all. I think I'll try for Song of Achilles again. Maybe if I put it on my desk, in plain sight, I'll get to it?

I loved Song of Achilles Linda. I found it hypnotic and fascinating and it made me want to run to my shelves for Homer.

July is getting away from me already. I'm in the middle of a fascinating non-fiction read, My Promised Land, which I don't want to be distracted from. I've promised to read The Mists of Avalon with my daughter. If I get through both of those this month, I may get to an Orange read as well. Isn't life supposed to slow down in the summer? Ain't happenin' here!

Ain't happenin' here either Linda! We have been 'logging'. Taking out some old cottonwood trees & a huge plum tree whose branches broke from the snow this winter. We are nearly done but my shoulders are killing me from running that old power saw. I couldn't believe it when he had me running the saw. I guess he thought I had leaned from my 3 brothers who were cutters....not! I only learned to swear like a logger from them. lol!~!
Anyway my reading time has gone to pot this summer too. I have only managed one Orange thus far, When We Were Bad. I am hoping to get another couple in by month's end but don't see it happening at this point. However I refuse to wish Winter back although I can hardly wait for Football Season this Fall.
I am going to have to see if my library has My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel. I went over to the book page and this one sounds like a truly wonderful read. Thanx for the reck.

I read it 18 years ago (I remember it precisely because I was pregnant, and finished the book during those first weeks when a baby sleeps a lot). It had a huge impact on me but I've often wondered how much of that was hormonal, LOL.

#15 My Promised Land isn't due for publication until November, Belva. Tell your library to order it now...it's very, very good. And important, I think.

#16 Daughter has read it once already; I'm eager to get into it, having read the Prologue. I just need to find blocks of reading time, and am frustrated that I'm not doing so. Funny, I don't remember MY baby sleeping a lot during those first weeks. Seems like I'd just think she was down for a while, start doing something (or napping myself) and she'd wake up again. Partly why she's an only!

I was unaware that Mists of Avalon was 7th in a series by Bradley until last night. Have you read the others? Just wondering if they can be read as stand-alones.
