Does anyone here have experience with the British Library 19th Century Collection of ebooks? It has only been around for a couple of years, but it already has a most confusing history.
At first the word was that the British Library was going to make 60,000 19th century titles available as free ebooks. These are PDFs, not Epub editions, so I imagine they must use quite a lot of device memory.
The free offer didn't last. They moved to a subscription model with a modest monthly fee, then ditched that in favor of a one-time $89.99 lifetime access fee. Has anyone here paid that? Do you feel that you get your money's worth?
There is an app for iPads that includes several dozen free titles for sampling. Unfortunately, when I thought that I was downloading the first title I selected to my iPad, I found that I hadn't succeeded in doing that; I could only read the book when connected to the Internet. No good. The app does not make it clear what I am doing wrong.
The British Library also runs BiblioBoard, which is another iPad app with curated collections that have separate fees. It would seem that if you pay the $89.99 for the whole kit and kaboodle, you wouldn't need to pay for any of these collections separately. But I'm not entirely clear on that, either.
Any information or accounts of experiences with these initiatives would be most welcome. One online reviewer (of only a handful) says that the apps are not well-supported.
