I read it a couple of years ago and loved it, so I ordered a copy for my 14 year old granddaughter this year. Now I don't really remember clearly--does it have any over-the-top violence or bad language? I don't remember anything like that, but it's been a while.

Katie & I often read the same books, but I should stick with things I've read recently when choosing for her.

It's been several years for me too, but I recall the character as very endearing and nothing at all offensive in the text.

It has an older sensibility to it, similar to the times it depicts.

I think it's quite safe and cozy. :-)

Ditto. I enjoyed it; and the main character is what, 11 or so? I think it's ok.

Thanks. This has been a big help.

This book is absolutely suitable for your granddaughter. It is the first in a series that introduces 11 year old Flavia de Luce. I have enjoyed the entire series to date and I am well past middle age.

I was going to read the second book but picked up the wrong one--number 5--so I've got to go back to the store. I've got Sweetness all wrapped up for my granddaughter. I hope she likes it.

I loved all of them and I'm almost 70. And have passed along to my teenage daughters and younger grandchildren without fear of harm. The one just out was probably my least favorite but SPOILER ALERT at least the next one will have her back home. I hope he keeps churning them out indefinitely.
