FOUND. There's a book that I started reading at my aunt and uncle's house in 1983. It was an old book at the time and was likely from the 50s or 60s, maybe earlier. It was a sci-fi adventure about a boy at some kind of academy for astronauts. I remember a scene of the boys playing a game like soccer, with a ball that was filled with liquid or in a room with variable gravity, or some such, that caused the ball's speed and direction to be unpredictable. I really don't remember any more about the book, and I never could find the book on any subsequent visit to my aunt and uncle's house.
The book is Stand by for Mars! by Carey Rockwell.

I'm sorry, but I don't quite understand.

I think >2 guido47: was suggesting you look at the original short story that Orson Scott Card's novel Ender's Game was based on. Because although Ender's Game features the topic and a scene like the one you mention, it was published a bit late for you (1985).
However, the book was based on a short story that the author originally published in the science fiction magazine Analog Science Fiction and Fact in August 1977. I haven't read the original short story though, so I don't know if it fits your description.

I found it. And it wasn't Heinlein. It was Stand by for Mars! by Carey Rockwell.
