CA_DMV - Better Late than Never!

It's mid-February and I'm just now joining. I'm going to count the book I finished in January in my February count. I'm hoping that joining this group will be the inspiration I need to read those poor neglected "friends". I've set a modest goal as I have a lot going on in 2020. I thought I would have more time to read after I retired...boy was I WRONG!!!

1. The Dying Breed was written by a former co-worker. Reads like a YA novel. Not sure if that was the intent but a very enjoyable read. I have the other two books and plan on reading them.

2. Host ended up being an enjoyable friend. So glad I took it off the shelf and blew off the dust. Put that's the point of this challenge...uncovering those poor forgotten souls.

3. Drinking: A Love Story provides some great insight on what makes an alcoholic tick. A worthwhile read.

4. The Great Influenza...it's all about timing. It was very interesting reading this book as the world goes through the COVID-19 pandemic. I'm glad I pulled it off the shelf when I did.

5. My Sister's Keeper...Yes, I finally read this one. Very well written story that brings up moral and ethical questions that have no easy answer. I liked how the story was told through the voice of each character.

6. Return to the Hiding Place...Interesting account of Hans Poley's experience during WWII and being part of the Dutch resistance. His faith saw him through the difficult times.

7. Riding for My Life...I was disappointed in this book. It seems a bit disjointed, more like reading random memories than a book documenting Julie Krone's career as a jockey or even what it was like being a woman breaking into a predominately man's sport.

8. Tess of the D'Urbervilles...I'm trying to read more "classics" and this one has been on the shelf for quite a while. Let's just say I'm not into tragic Victorian love stories. The only reason why I completed the book (scanned over half of it) was because this is one of my Sister's all time favorite books. All I can say is...I tried to like it.

9. Blind Man's Bluff: The Untold Story of American Submarine Espionage...Interesting history on the submarine espionage that occurred during WWII and through the cold war. It also gave a glimpse into what it must be like to be a submariner. Mare Island was mentioned a few times and made me wonder if my Grandpa who worked at MI during WWII worked on any of these subs.

10. Horse Heaven...This story gave a fictional glimpse into the world of horse racing. It was not always a pretty picture.

11. The Witness...I normally really enjoy Dee Henderson's books but this one fell a little flat for me.

12 The Brave...A beautifully written story about a troubled father and son relationship and how a tragic incident in each of their lives pulls them closer together. I kept waiting for Nicholas Evans to write another book before taking this one off the shelf. I couldn't wait any longer...hopefully another novel will come along.

13. The Tao of Pooh...In college, everyone who took the dreaded Philosophy 101 class was "stuck" reading this book. Of course, I had an odd ball instructor that did his own thing and this was not required reading. I always wondered what I missed. I didn't miss a thing.

14. The Te of Piglet...Piglet did have some interesting thoughts but for the most part, I didn't get it. I guess I'm not a philosopher!

15. Christy...I always enjoyed the TV show and I'm glad I finally took this one off the shelf.

16. The Autobiography of Santa Claus...I thought this was going to take the various legends regarding Santa Claus and weave them into a story told by Santa. It started out that way then suddenly changed lanes. :(

17. Timepiece...What a wonderful story about forgiveness. So glad that I finally pulled this friend off of the shelf.

18. The Defiant Breed...I actually enjoyed this one more than the first book of the Breed Trilogy. I never knew that my former co-worker was a great story teller. I'll finish the trilogy in 2021.
