School Bans: 2021 and 2022
Last month, the American Library Association (ALA) released its report on the "Top 10 Challenged Books" and PEN America released its report "Banned in the USA: Rising School Book Bans Threaten Free Expression and Students' First Amendment Rights". PEN's report focuses on books removed within the nine months from July 1, 2021, through March 31, 2022.
Many of the challenges came from organized groups, rather than individuals within the community, and were for tens to hundreds of titles each time.
As in recent years, the banning focuses on Black, Indigenous (/ Native American), and various people of color; LGBTQ+ authors, characters, and themes; social justice; and sex education. A quick look at the numbers: 1,586 bans involving 1,081 writers and artists. The bans reportedly impeded access for over two million grade-school students in the USA.
The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF) picked out the named graphic novels or books that rely heavily on sequential art, finding 39 separate works. All 39 are listed below.
