I've read nothing--what do you recommend?

That is one I haven't read, but you can't go wrong with James Baldwin! I don't have any reviews or stars because I read those books long before I cataloged my books on LT, but I liked all of the ones I have read.

Go tell it on the mountain might be an obvious place to start with the fiction, because it’s quite autobiographical and very well known. With the essays it doesn’t really matter, they are all good and easy to get into: Notes of a native son or The fire next time, whichever you find first.

If you’re exploring him as an LGBT writer rather than as a black writer (not that it really makes any sense to separate the two) then you might well start with Giovanni’s room, of course.

I haven't read any James Baldwin in years! This thread inspires me to go back and read some more. Thank you good people.

I'm currently gradually reading through the short story collection Going to Meet the Man, which I highly recommend if you think you'd like to start with short stories. Last week I read "Sonny's Blues" from that collection, one of the very best short stories I've ever read.
