>3 HugoDumas: Like most of us I purchase books with the intention of reading them. I used to have a LOT of subscriptions to EP over the years... and before you know it, you have SO many books you're a bit swamped. I've slowly been whittling my collection down, and in some instances I decide it's just time to sell the book even if I have not read it, and in other instances I actually have two copies. Yup, did not realize I have two copies of Sophie's Choice :)

I think you are obligated to read it twice. I just hope I never find myself with a second copy of “War and Peace”!

>5 astropi: coincidently that’s what I am reading now (Sophie’s Choice) though mine is an unsigned Franklin Library First Edition 1979.

With respect to DLEs they were usually unsealed on the day they arrived and read immediately because of the huge expense.

>6 sdawson: Thank you! No serious complaints :)
How are you doing?

>7 jroger1: Haha! There definitely are books I am happy to read more than once -- Moby Dick, Heart of Darkness, Stardust... I'm a bit eclectic, but lean towards classics.

>8 HugoDumas: How do you like it?

>9 astropi: finely crafted work with a license to use extreme profanity and explore the sexual fantasies of Styron.

>12 astropi: having seen the movie I was surprised by the profanity and graphic erotica, like he was channeling Henry Miller. He was criticized for doing the same in his other great novel on Nat Turner. Nevertheless I give it my rare 5 star rating. It was a good read.

>9 astropi: “I'm a bit eclectic, but lean towards classics.”

I’ve spent most of my reading life with nonfiction, but in recent years I’ve been trying to catch up on some of the wonderful literature I’ve missed. Like you, I favor the classics, but I also dive into some newer and more fun novels on occasion — many of Suntup’s offerings have kept me amused. My current favorite classical authors are Twain, Poe, Dickens, Melville, Shakespeare, and Aristophanes, but with special accolades for Don Quixote and Gargantua & Pantagruel. (I like humor.) Beautiful and plentiful illustrations are a strong plus when choosing the editions to read.

>13 HugoDumas: Thank you, that's good to hear :)

>14 jroger1: I'm slowly building up my personal "fine press Shakespeare" library which is stitched together from various publications. My personal favorite Romeo and Juliet is the Heritage Press edition -- I got a signed edition (Sylvain Sauvage) years ago for dirt cheap! It's definitely gone up a lot in price, but still undervalued like many HP and LEC editions.

>15 astropi:
My Shakespeares are a mix, but my go-to set is the 39-volume Byam Shaw set published 10-15 years ago by EP. Comfortable reading size, okay illustrations, glossary in the back.

My favorite individual editions are the three DLEs - Midsummer Night’s Dream, Tempest, MacBeth - gorgeously and profusely illustrated.

I made the mistake of purchasing 4 of Folio’s Letterpress Shakespeares, which I never use because of their large size and total lack of notes and illustrations.

I also have each drama in either an inexpensive Oxford or Arden edition to assist me in understanding what the heck Shakespeare was talking about in many instances.
