War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy 2006 LIMITED EDITION

Tolstoy’s historical novel about the failed Napoleonic invasion of Russia in 1812 is his most famous work. A massive book of 1430 pages, it is a challenging, but in the end, a fascinating story as it details the hardships and friendships created by war. There is of course romance, as well as death and intrigue. The story is broken into four separate books, each with three to five chapters, and it is probably best to read one book at a time with a light-hearted reading break with another novel in between.

The Folio Society limited edition combines the entire story into one very hefty tome that has been translated and introduced by Rosemary Edmonds. Over 600 scribbled line drawings by Feliks Topolski are scattered throughout the text, some full page, others only part of a page. The endpapers are plain gold.

The book has gilt top page edge and a grey ribbon marker. It is fully bound in maroon Wassa goatskin leather, blocked with a design in black, white and gold on both covers and spine. The black solander box (26.7x19x8.8cm.) has a blocked title on the spine, and as well as the book, encloses a 12 page leaflet leaflet bound in gold card titled "What is War and Peace?" by John Bayley. 1750 copies were printed (my copy is number 980) and the original cost was £145.

The Folio Society has published War and Peace in several other editions. All but the 2014 edition have the same contents. They were :-
* - 1971 Two volumes. Quarter bound in dark red leather, grey canvas boards blocked with a design in black.
* - 1971 Limited edition of 2000 copies, same as above edition except bound in dark blue leather. Back then the cost was £22.
* - 1978 A reduced photolithographic reprint in one volume of the edition published in 1971. Quarter bound in red buckram with light brown sides printed with an image.
* - 1997 In two volumes as part of a four volume single slipcased set called Great Russian Novels that also included Crime and Punishment and Doctor Zhivago.
* - 2014 A new two volume edition using a translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. Illustrated by Igor Karash. Quarter bound in black cloth with black image blocked paper sides.

>1 wcarter: I love my 2014 edition, however this LE looks amazing. Rosemary Edmonds was the penguin translator of my first W&P and may remain my favourite for sentimental reasons above the Maudes and LV&RP
