Middle Grade or YA about abused boy who wears masks in pictures

One of my seniors came in today asking for help looking for a book he read years ago. He's not sure what age he read it so it could be YA or Middle Grade. All he remembered was that it was about a boy who was being abused by his family and because of that he wore masks in photographs. HE eventually met a girl and gave her a picture of himself before running away from home trusting that she wouldn't send the police after him. any help would be greatly appreciated.
