This was a book I found in my school library in the early 70s. It could have been published in the early 70s, 60s, or possibly 50s. I can’t remember the title but do remember that one of the chapters was called “The Question Mark in the Kitchen.”
The story is about a girl who has come to live with an older, sedate couple with a super-clean house. They are kind to her but she doesn’t really connect with them. She eventually meets another couple in the neighborhood who are younger. They have a messy house and she loves helping clean it. In the end she goes to live with them—the older couple acknowledge that it’s a better fit. I don’t remember much else.
I’m not sure why this book has stuck in my brain, but it has, so I’d love to track it down and read it again. I’ve tried many different types of searches but so far haven’t come up with anything.
It was a hardcover book with a plain yellow cover, I think.

Sensible Kate by Doris Gates? Chapter 1 is titled The Question Mark in the Kitchen. I took a quick look and the plot seems right.
