Why was Bridge to Terrebithia banned?

I honestly cannot find 1 reason why said book should be banned. A little enlightenment please?

I think it's because a child dies in it.

Some groups don't like fantasy, and that may be a factor.

I saw the movie in grade school and cried my eyes out. Then I got over it. I guess people want to protect children from sad stuff?

I cried at the end of Charlotte's Web, and even though I didn't cry I was still pretty sad at the end of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Also, an octopus was killed in Island of the Blue Dolphins and I thought that was mean. So all of those books should be banned too, to protect other children from the risk of being ensaddened.

Yes, we can't have saddness. Only happy, wholesome books must be permitted. Has the Velveteen Rabbit been banned yet? The toy rabbit is thrown away. That's got to inflict some damage on its readers.

There are two more common reasons - one very mundane, the other a bit of a head-scratcher at times.

Language - there's been a big movement to get rid of anything with profanity of any kind from school shelves. So it becomes the "official" reason when the kids say damn and hell to remove the book. Lame as it is - some schools compromise an just get permission from parents for the kids to read the materials.

The other reason - witchcraft and religious intolerance bordering on blasphemy. The kids create their own world - welcome witchcraft! Hard-core views say the kids are being presented as on the same level as god because they create a world. Then there's the fact that the kids openly question organized religion and going to church. It's not the main focus of the book by a long shot - but they talked about it and now the cat's out of the bag.

The "it's depressing!" is also a reason but the first two tend to be the more cited. In 2003, when it made the ALA's top 10, the 2 top reasons were language and occult/satanism:

Would it kill such parents to be actual parents and do the parenting work themselves, rather than trying to fob it off on public servants?

Another way to look at it is: Why are these people forcing their parenting processes on the public servants and children not their own?

No, it's that these people think their way is the ONLY way, and if they have to force it down others' throats, so be it. After all, it's good for them.

lets also ban every book that has a real motive and only talk about people who stay home and live a normal, boring life because there is nothing sad to cause them to do anything else.

and every book that would be rated more than G if made into a movie
