The author does such a good job of making the characters in each story full of love and compassion, but also full of insecurities and doubts. They seem very real. Sarah Mast is an Amish midwife who has come to Pleasant Valley to make a fresh start and help out her aging Aunt Emma, who is also a midwife. She sets out to transform part of their house into a birthing center for the Amish community. Their neighbor, Aaron Miller and his 2 brothers (carpenters by trade), will be asked to help with this construction project. Here is where it gets interesting. Aaron, although he starts to have strong feelings for Sarah, can't approve of her being a midwife (since his mother died giving birth while under the care of a midwife, who was Emma). There are a lot of secrets that need to come out in this story, and then there is also the medical doctor in the community who wants to put Sarah out of business. Sarah has her hands full in this story. She is trying to make her Aunt feel useful, trying to help Aaron get over his fear of the midwife and trying to stay out of jail by delivering babies against an order from the court. Well written and had my interest from start to finish. I enjoyed this fourth book of Marta Perry's series about the Amish of Pleasant Valley, PA. It addresses issues of midwives rights, rumspringa teens, heredity of alcoholism, and family secrets. The epilogue was a little confusing because I wasn't sure if Sarah and Aaron had married yet, and if so, when? geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
