After being stood up at the altar, compulsive over-planner Elliott Chandler decides to turn their honeymoon on Oahu into a vacation for one. Fate puts a hitch in his plans, however, when the airport is snowed in and his flight is delayed. In the airport, the jilted groom catches the eye of another stranded traveler: the laidback and very sexy Derek Windsor. Derek breaks the ice and strikes up a conversation, and as the temperature drops outside, the heat between them rises. Pity they're both going to different islands, but if their flight doesn't leave soon, Mr. Calm-and-Cool may just tempt Mr. Play-It-Safe to do something reckless. And that plane isn't going anywhere any time soon. This novella was previously published and is also available as part of the Changing Plans collection. I rarely run across good books written in first person, but this is one of those books. We meet Elliot stranded at the airport because of a snowstorm. Earlier in the day, he was stood up at the altar by his now ex-fiancé but has decided to take his Hawaii honeymoon anyway out of spite. Elliot admits to us, the readers, that he’s a planner, that he planned out everything from the wedding to the honeymoon, but after getting ditched, he’s decided to wing it, and lucky for him that he does. While waiting at the airport he meets Derek who is flying on the same plane and strikes up a conversation with him. Their flight is cancelled because of the bad weather, and Elliot invites Derek to spend the night with him at the hotel he booked… just in case.
There isn’t much that I can tell you about the plot because it’s very basic. It takes place at the airport and the hotel as Elliot and Derek get to know each other. What makes this story is Elliot’s experience and how the author pulls the readers in to experience what is happening to Elliot, with him. All I can say is this book was nearly perfect. It’s like we were in Elliot’s thoughts and in his body as he described everything to us, even up to including the room number plackets on the hotel walls. The descriptions were alive and vivid. The author did such a good job I was really hoping Elliot and Derek got their HEA before the story ended, but they were such different men in what they wanted out of a partner it didn’t look like that was going to happen. So I was imagining how it turned out for them when I found out there are two other books in this series. I’ll be reading both of the next books because this story was just that good.
I mentioned that the story was ‘almost’ perfect. The parts that I could have done less with were the description of the hotel, and the time from their arrival there to getting to the room. The other part I wish was shorter, was where the last quarter of the book was filled with sex. I didn’t need to read so much of it to understand how attracted the two men were to each other. The sex scenes were just too long for me.
I very much enjoyed Getting Off the Ground and would recommend this book to others. I’d like to give it 4.5 Stars but because of Goodreads’ rating system, I can’t. So I’ll give it 4 Stars instead.
