NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • This essential Star Wars Legends novel chronicles the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise, and the origins of the saga’s most enduring evil—the malevolent Sith master Palpatine.

“The best Star Wars publication to date . . . [James] Luceno takes Darth Plagueis down the dark path and never looks back.”—Newsday

Darth Plagueis: one of the most brilliant Sith Lords who ever lived. Possessing power is all he desires; losing it is the only thing he fears. As an apprentice, he embraces the ruthless ways of the Sith. When the time is right, he destroys his Master—and vows never to suffer the same fate. For like no other disciple of the dark side, Darth Plagueis learns to command the ultimate power . . . over life and death.
Darth Sidious: Plagueis’s chosen apprentice. Under the guidance of his Master, he secretly studies the ways of the Sith while publicly rising to power in the galactic government, first as Senator, then as Chancellor, and eventually as Emperor.
Darth Plagueis and Darth Sidious, Master and acolyte, target the galaxy for domination—and the Jedi Order for annihilation. But can they defy the merciless Sith tradition? Or will the desire of one to rule supreme, and the dream of the other to live forever, sow the seeds of their destruction?
“Luceno draws on his storytelling skill and prodigious knowledge of the [Star Wars] world . . . to craft a complex tale of ambition and desire.”—Library Journal

“Palpatine raised his clawed hands. “I executed them with these! And with the power of my mind. I became a storm, Magister - a weapon strong enough to warp bulkheads and hurl bodies across cabinspaces. I was death itself!” (p. 144)

Lots of force, violence and scheaming. The book focus as much on Palpatine as it does Plagueis, and, odd as it is to say about someone who is the titular character, I wanted more Plagueis. However he and Palpatine were both excelent. There was also a touching look into Darth Maul’s background. I never imagined I would feel sympathy for him, but now I do.

I joined the recently started r/fantasy bookbingo and read this for the prompt “Rrologues and epilogues” as the book has both, but also, in its capacity of being vowen into so many other Star Wars stories also serve as prologue to other stories.

This was a interesting book that I really liked. It provided a ton of back story of Darth Plagueis who is mentioned in the Star Wars movie Revenge of the Sith. In this book you learn who Plagueis is, where he came from, how he became a sith, his plans, how he met Palpitine (Sidious) and how me an Sidious manipluated things that lead up to the Phantom Menance. We get a idea of how Anikan came to be, the creation of the clone army and even some back story on Dooku. Lots of good stuff and it takes you even so far as to touch into a scene in Attack of the Clones. I highly recommend this one if you are really into Star Wars.

However, as it turns out, this book is now considered Legends. Meaning, that when Disney bought up Lucasfilm which includes all of Star Wars they decided to tag all existing books, comics, etc as Legends material which is no longer considered canon. They did this to make room for their own stories, sequels, prequels (I assume some day) and the sort. Indeed, the books I read previous to this one are of the new canon. This makes sense. But I would not let that fact keep you from reading this or any other Legends books. Until such time that they ever contradict these stories it is just as enjoyable as if it was still "canon". ( )

This was a great book to fill in so many blanks for Star Wars fans, I really enjoyed it. The only problem was that in quite a few sections there was a lot of rambling descriptions about banking, Muuns, planets etc. which could have been condensed into more enjoyable yet still descriptive sections. I really loved this book.

This book starts off nearly 70 years BBY [Before the Battle of Yavin] on the Legends Timeline. And even though it's called "Darth Plageuis" it's actually about Palpatine and his rise to power more than it is about his master.

I know other readers have been very disappointed about this and it's quite understandable; at first, I was a bit miffed too but then I really started to pay attention to the story and it hooked me.

There are many things about Darth Plageuis throughout the book and how he played behind the scenes, especially in his civilian role as Hego Damask of Damask Holdings on Muun. The experiments Plageuis conducted are discussed and I was pleased to read/hear when a favorite villain was introduced too.

The story goes right up through Episode One: The Phantom Menace and the parts Palpatine played in that story.

**All thoughts and opinions are my own.** ( )

Every so often I pick up a book based on the Star Wars universe. Each time I put the book after the first few chapters or so bored by the writing, or the characters whom I never met. Enter Darth Plagueis. It kept coming up as the best in the expanded universe and it's the best I've read. It's the only that I finished!

This book is actually more about Darth Sidious than Darth Plagueis. The author really must be a big Star Wars fan. From a couple spoken lines about Darth Plagueis in the second trilogy, he was able to expand and really make Darth Plagueis and Darth Sidious more than just evil Sith Lords.

A lot of the characters from the second trilogy make an appearance (strangely no Yoda).

I did struggle through the descriptions on technologies and the huge cast of characters in the Star Wars universe. The author chose to skip some, what could have been, fascinating parts of Darth Sidious' descent.

However, I was pleasantly surprise the book was not filled with light saber battles and just pleasantly surprised overall. ( )

In the same way that the past was reconfigured by selective memory, future events, too, were moving targets.
In the same way that tectonic forces cause a boulder to plunge into a river, forever diverting its course, events give rise to individuals who, stepping into the current of the Force, alter the tide of history.
Are you evil, then, or are you simply stronger and more awake than others? Who gives more shape to sentient history: the good, who adhere to the tried and true, or those who seek to rouse beings from their stupor and lead them to glory?
