It is winter in the mountains of northern Greece and as the snow falls in the tiny village of Vrisi a coffin is unearthed and broken open. But to the astonishment of the mourners at the graveside, the remains inside the coffin have been transformed, and as news of the bizarre discovery spreads through the village like forest fire it sets tongues wagging and heads shaking. Then, in the shadow of the shrine of St Fanourios (patron saint of lost things), a body is found, buried under the fallen snow - a body whose identity only deepens the mystery around the exhumed remains. There's talk of witchcraft, and the devil's work - but it seems the truth, behind both the body and the coffin, may be far stranger than the villagers' wildest imaginings. Hermes Diaktoros, drawn to the mountains by a wish to see an old and dear friend, finds himself embroiled in the mysteries of Vrisi, as well as the enigmatic last will and testament of Greece's most admired modern poet. The Whispers of Nemesis is a story of desperate measures and long-kept secrets, of murder and immortality and of pride coming before the steepest of falls.… (meer)

Another enthralling mystery in Zouroudi's Seven Deadly sins Hermes Diaktoros mystery series; having read it, I think the sin is of pride. In this rural Greek village where the story is set, it is customary after several years to exhume a dead body and rebury the bones. After the exhumation of a famous poet's body, pig bones are discovered in the coffin. This throws the poet's family in a tizzy. According to the poet's will, none of his family can receive any inheritance until the exhumation and reburial. Hermes is called in to investigate the situation. A subsequent dead body is found near a chapel of St. Fanourios [Greek Orthodox saint of lost things]; I see why Zouroudi used that particular name. With the poet's ID card found on the body, it is identified as his. It is assumed he's hidden himself away for several years for whatever reason and the family will have to wait all over again for their inheritance. From various clues, Hermes suspects murder and after tracking down the killer, dispenses his one-of-a-kind justice.

There were unusual such twists and turns that I couldn't guess the solution, although finishing the novel, I saw how everything fit together. The author's love for Greece and its people and landscape shines through every page. In this whole series, I like how Hermes goes about solving each mystery and meting out justice.

Very highly recommended. ( )

In "The Whispers of Nemesis" lässt Anne Zouroudi ihren genialen Detektiv Hermes Diaktoros erneut einen Kriminalfall lösen, diesmal im spätwinterlichen Griechenland.

In accordance with the rites of the Greek Orthodox Church its time for an exhumation in the small northern village of Vrisi, but there is a surprise when the coffin is broken open. Hermes Diaktoros becomes involved in the investigation to find out just what happened to the body. His investigation is further complicated when another body is discovered by the shrine of St Fanourios (saint of lost things). Its an intriguing mystery, but Hermes is able to find a solution which ensures that justice is done. His otherworldliness is emphasised in this book and as a creation he does remind me of Harley Quinn, Agatha Christie's mysterious character who also metes out a strange form of justice. As always the real star of the book is the wintery Greece which tourists never get to see. Wonderful. ( )

His end was recorded somewhere and then lost;

Or perhaps History passed it by.

And with good reason, a thing as trivial

as that she didn't deign to record.

EXHUMATION

The rite of exhumation ... is the last important rite that must be performed individually for a particular dead person by his surviving kin. The relationship between the deceased and his relatives is for the most part ended at the exhumation. After this the obligations of the living to the deceased are carried out collectively on occasions that serve to honour all the dead.
