The main character is a strong 13 yr old girl. This book brings together coming of age with very difficult decisions. Poignant. Amazing book!! ( ) Carrying Mason by Joyce Magnin Rating: 3 stars Ruby Day isn't like everyone else in her small town. Her disability draws the attention of her small community, but not always in a positive way. After Ruby Day loses her only son in an accident, his best friend Luna decides that it is now up to her to move in to look after Ruby Day. When Ruby's Aunt shows up to escort her to back to Philadelphia to a hospital for the feebleminded, she finds out how determined a town is to save one of their own. I enjoyed this novel for several reasons. I like to see strong female characters who are both likeable and believable. The religious aspect of the novel was meaningful without being to 'in your face.' While I understand the 'small town' atmosphere written into the storyline, somehow the southern dialect didn't work for me. It seemed a little stereotypical instead of coming off genuine for the characters. However, it was wasn't enough to distract from the overall message. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
